Be Safe When Traveling Alone

Most people who are traveling and going on vacation travel with at least one other person. They travel with their family or friends and in some cases their coworkers. However, some people actually enjoy the experience of traveling alone and taking in the sights and sounds of new culture on their own. If you are one of those people who enjoy solo travel, you need to make sure that you are safe when you are on vacation. With a little bit of common sense, you will be able to have a great trip and remain safe.

First, if you are heading to a country where English isn’t the primary language, you need to learn a bit of the native tongue. Learn as much as possible before you leave, and make sure that you commit the most important phrases (such as how to ask for the police or medical attention) to memory. You should also carry a phrasebook with you just in case you need it.

Second, you need to do some research on the area. Know the areas of the city or town that are good to visit and the places that you should avoid. You will find many traveler sites that have information from other traveler who will be able to tell you the places you are going to want to avoid.

Third, be careful with your money. Don’t keep all of it on you, and don’t keep it all at the hotel if it isn’t one of the better hotels in the area. Use traveler’s checks where possible. Stay out of bars that look shady, and keep away from unlit areas at night. While you might want to mingle with the locals and talk with them, you never want to put your trust in someone you just met.

Staying safe when you travel on your own is easy as long as you use plenty of common sense and listen to that little tingling feeling in the back of your head when you know you should be careful.
