Beach Workouts 101

When we think about all-inclusive vacations, we think sun, we think beach, we think unlimited food and drink, and maybe above all, we think r-e-l-a-x-a-t-i-o-n.

If you are an exercise enthusiast and worry that you don’t have the time or equipment available to keep up with your daily exercise regime, here are some ways you can stay active while enjoying an all-inclusive vacation. A quick and easy workout at anytime of the day will save you from the aftermath of the buffet and swim up bar.

Beach Run
Running on the beach is a beautiful way to see different parts of your surroundings as well as an effective means of burning calories. A beach jog burns 1.6 times more calories than running on a paved or hard surface. Steady state jogging for 30 minutes on a hard surface burns approximately 350 calories. Due to the uneven surface and the ‘give’ to the sand, 560 calories are burned as more energy is expended per stride.

Beach Walk
Just as a beach run burns more calories per mile than on a regular surface, the same goes for walking. If higher intensities are not for you, then stick with a brisk walk along the coast to get your heart rate up.

If you are a walker who wants a challenge, try doing run/walk intervals. Walk for 1 minute and jog lightly for 1 minute for the extent of your workout.

Sand Workout
Joining in on a beach volleyball game is a great way to stay in shape on your holiday. Lunging and jumping for volleyballs in the sand not only gives the legs a great workout, but playing 45 minutes of this high energy anaerobic sport can burn up to 450 calories.

Surf Workout
There are many activities in the ocean that you can take part in on vacation. By simply treading water for a total of 20 minutes, you are burning close to 100 calories. Just think of the exercise you’d be getting if you did 45 minutes to an hour of a water sport! Here are a few examples:

  • Swimming (front crawl): 560 calories burned / hour
  • Paddle Boat: 280 calories burned / hour
  • Kayaking: 400 calories burned / hour
  • Snorkeling: 350 calories burned / hour
  • Surfing (body): 210 calories burned / hour
  • Surfing (board): 400 calories burned / hour

When it comes to exercising while on vacation, be creative and have fun doing activities that you would not get the opportunity to do at home! If staying fit is important to you, stay active while enjoying the indulgences of your all-inclusive.
