Safe Solo Travel

Although the majority of the travel industry is geared towards traveling couples and families, more and more are opting to go on vacation alone, and I don’t blame them. With no one else to consider, traveling alone can let you really relax with no diapers to change, no picky eaters and no one complaining that their feet hurt. Here’s a small travel guide for those traveling solo.

Many all inclusive vacations will charge solo travelers a single supplement fee, as they know they will not make as much money; cruise lines are notorious for this. So look for a resort that does not penalize solo travelers or where the fee is relatively small (under $100 is usually a good deal).

A major concern for solo travelers is safety, but there are many precautions one can take to protect yourself. Plan your itinerary ahead of time and share it with someone. Setting up times to contact loved ones ahead of time can provide you with some security, as any missed meetings will act as an alert. Renting a cell phone in the area you’re traveling to will allow you to stay in touch and can often be much cheaper than switching plans on your current phone. Also, separate your things when you travel. Don’t keep all your money or identification in the same place and don’t carry your passport with you, instead keep it somewhere safe.

If you still feel uneasy about traveling alone there are plenty of places in the world that are known for their kindness and safe travel like New Zealand. Also, for your vacation alone you might feel more comfortable traveling to a place where English is the primary language, such as Ireland.
