Discover the Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico

Located in southeaster Mexico, the Yucatan Peninsula separates the Caribbean Sea from the Gulf of Mexico, with the northern coastline on the Yucatan Channel. The largest group of modern Maya can be found on Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula. The Mayan indigenous population was first exposed to Europeans by a Spanish shipwreck and its survivors in 1511. Today the Peninsula is scattered with Mayan ruins and temples which remember centuries-long battles for independence as well as rich Mayan history.

The Yucatan Peninsula is long known to be different from the rest of Mexico. The area largely escaped the drug violence that plagued other parts of Mexico and is considered to be the safest part of the country. Despite the ‘otherness’ of this are of Mexico, it still has all the fantastic aspects that the rest of the coastal areas of the country. Fantastic white sand beaches, lush vegetation, and year-round beautiful weather makes the Yucatan and perfect vacation spot for couples, families, and party seekers.

There are many things to do and see when you are on the Yucatan Peninsula. If you can peel yourself away from the beautiful beaches, there are some great activities to engage in. Try scuba diving in Cozumel along the Caribbean coast, fly-fishing off the Punta Allen Peninsula, Cenote Diving and underwater exploration, bird watching, and jungle excursions to Bonampak & Yuxchilan.

If history is your thing and you are interested in exploring breathtaking Mayan pyramids and ruins, then the following are must-sees while in the area. Tulum is a seaside Maya fortress with crumbling stone walls set against a clear turquoise- water backdrop. Calakmul is a Maya city built in the lower Yucatan. It is a near 48km from the Guatemalan border and is completely surrounded by jungle. Here, you can find the fallest pyramid in the Yucatan. Some other must see historical Mayan sites are Uxmal, Chichen Itza, Ek Balam, and Palenque.
