5 Great Places to Get Away from the Cold

The Canadian winter has arrived. Naturally this means cold weather, icy roads, and shorter days. If these things all sound depressing perhaps a dose of vitamin D can help change that state of mind. There is no better source of vitamin D than the sun so check out these tropical locations to help cure those winter blues.

Havana, Cuba

Aside from sandy beaches and cigars, the capital of Cuba boasts an important history. Cuba’s spotty political relationship with the United States stems back to the revolution led by Che Guevara and Fidel Castro. Since 1961, Cuba has been a communist country so for the Canadian traveler it is interesting to note the many differences between communism and the free market economy in Canada.

Sosua is renowned throughout the Dominican Republic for being the most beautiful beach on the island. The white sand beaches and tropical fish are a huge draw for tourists. Located near Puerto Plata, many of the nearby resorts offer day trips to check out this unique beach town.

For the spring break crowd, nothing beats Cancun. Party goers from all over North America make their annual trip here to blow off some steam from the difficult school year. Considering schools across the continent have different periods for break, this party takes place continually from late January until April. Families beware, do not travel to Cancun during this time unless crowds of drunken undergrads aren’t a concern.

Negril, Jamaica

Negril is considered by many to be the best place to vacation in Jamaica. The picturesque white sandy beaches stretch on for miles and sympathetic locals are always interesting to speak with. An added benefit of Jamaica compared to other Caribbean nations is that the local language is English so its easy to get around.
