There is very little that differentiates teams when the world’s greatest hockey players gather on a global stage to compete for the most sought after prize in their sport. It can easily be argued that the Canadians did not ice the strongest squad in the Olympic tournament. The Russians boasted the most offensive firepower and the Americans had a well-rounded lineup with a lot to prove after losing in the gold medal game four years ago. Sweden and Finland are perennially strong when competing internationally. This was proven by Sweden’s gold medal performance at the Torino Olympics in 2006. So with so much parity in the Olympic hockey tournament, why did Canada fare so well in 2010 and 2014? The answer is simple, coaching. (more…)

Men’s Hockey Olympic Gold: An Impressive Feat
In recent years it has appeared the hockey world is catching up to Canada. Sochi’s Olympic results are a testament to Canada’s continued focus on keeping the nation’s national sport sacred. The gold medal victories by the men’s and women’s teams are impressive feats considering the staunch competition on the men’s side and the fact that the women had to defeat the United States’ powerhouse on two separate occasions. Tropical Countries in the Winter Olympics
Traditionally the winter Olympics are dominated by countries that have lots of snow. Recently there has been a trend developing for countries with warm weather climates to send representatives to the winter Olympics. Perhaps the most famous is the Jamaican bobsled team that inspired the movie ‘Cool Runnings’.
