Virgin Gorda, British Virgin Islands

Discovered by Christopher Columbus in 1493, the third largest island in the British cluster was named Virgin Gorda (or ‘fat virgin’) due to the mountain on the islands that looked to him like a protruding stomach. It wasn’t until the 1960s that the island had its first major resort.
