Car Rental Tips

Posted on: April 10th, 2012 by paul

Depending on where you are traveling, renting a car can be a wise choice and may be the fastest and easiest way to get around. If it seems like a wise choice make sure you have done your research first.  Are you legal to drive in the country you’re visiting? Which side of the road do they drive on? Is it safe for foreigners to drive? What are the rates like at the airport and at other rental sites around town? What is the price of gas?

There are many questions you should be asking yourself and then looking into before you swipe your credit card and rent a car in a foreign country. Here are a few guidelines to follow.

Compare Rates and Read the Terms and Conditions

The internet makes it easy to do research on any car rental company. Spend some time in researching different car rental companies and use third-party review sites to get an opinion of companies from previous customers.

Before committing to a company, read their terms and conditions to avoid any surprises. These include insurance and deposit policy.

Check Out Your Car When Picking it Up

Check that the specification is the same as what you booked before you sign. Make sure the car is as described and anything extra you requested is included. Also, bring your booking confirmation documents. Be sure to check the car thoroughly for any damage before you drive off the lot. If there is damage, point it out before you leave.

Get an International Driver’s License

It is recommended to get an international driver’s license when traveling abroad. Get this license before you leave from your ministry of transportation (as the tests overseas are tougher). Keep in mind that many car rental agencies insist on renters having their international driver’s license.
